There's a reason why children's playgrounds have monkey bars and old tires. That type of equipment really gives young bodies a variety of exercise. "We have all of that fun gear, but it's indoors," entrepreneur Lee Davey says.
Davey and his partner Jared Postance co-founded the Dynamic Conditioning Centre (www.dccentres.ca), Toronto's only athletic playground located at 25 St. Nicholas St. near Bay and Wellesley.
Their two-year-old centre serves recreational, amateur and professional athletes young and old. It offers health programs, a full range of therapy services and athletic conditioning in a unique, fun and alternative environment.
The centre is much different from a typical fitness club. "We offer innovative activities such as obstacle course programs for corporate team building," Postance says.
To truly condition body and soul, customers will find monkey bars, field turf, a sandbox, tractor tires, climbing ropes and mesh netting inside the centre. Customers may also take advantage of the centre's excellent educational programs.
Postance says the business was born out of wanting to do something "outside the box" within the fitness industry. "There was not enough fun in athletic conditioning," he says. "We have created the ultimate playground for athletes -- a place where people can actually enjoy training."
While their facility is very popular now, it took time to catch on. "Just because you build it, does not mean they will come," Davey says. "It takes many long hours, lots of advertising, a great product and plenty of word of mouth before customers hear about your new business."
Ready to apply what they've learned, Davey is anxious to grow the company into one of the most successful high performance athletic conditioning centres in the world. "To help more people to access this type of unique training, we'll open centres across Canada and then expand globally," he says.
