These are the kinds of questions young people might ask themselves. It is not easy to find a job which is the right fit for someone.
Before getting into the job market, job seekers have a lot of things to consider. To help you navigate your way to a successful and happy career, 24 hours spoke with said RDK manager Karoline deVries to help you navigate your way to a successful and happy career.
Q: Which jobs are in high demand?
A: The four in-demand areas include trades, health care, transportation and tourism/hospitality, said deVries.
Q: What do you think about the future prospects of these jobs? Why do you think they are getting popular?
A: I believe the future in all four areas will remain strong past 2010. The biggest reason pertain to demographics and the number of retirees is the number trained and ready to step into their roles. What also happens, which creates internal vacancies, are promotions and the need to fill vacant positions.
Q: Before people get into those fields, do they need special training or qualifications?
A: All four areas will require training some of courses are more advanced. For example in health care it takes approx six months to become a resident care aide and 12 months for LPN (this is going to change next year). Some trades will allow for on the job training followed by the apprenticeship certification training requirements; transportation requires short term driving to obtain either a Class 1 or 5 but longer when considering logistics. Entry level on the job training is provided for tourism and hospitality and then in order to advance some post- secondary education is required.
Q: What should people consider when choosing a job?
A: I would always recommend connecting with a career planning program to assist with decision making and planning. This service is offered at no cost by community service providers through government funding. Safety on the job is extremely important and ensuring that the company and position is the right fit for you. When being interviewed always ask questions that are important to you.
