Pinball, remembered as one of Toronto's most colourful CFL players during the 1980s and '90s, is one of several Torontonians involved in RAN, the Rapid Achievement Network.
Formed in 1996, RAN brought together six professional and business colleagues who, among other things, promote the advancement of children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
A project of the RAN group, The Rising Stars is an educational and fun activity program for children in the Jane/Finch area of North York. Michael Collymore, former Argonaut football player and Centennial College governor, handed off the Apple computers to willing receiver Pinball Clemons, who in turn passed them to Errol Stein, a volunteer with RAN.
Pinball spoke passionately to the crowd about his commitment to helping disadvantaged youth find the motivation and resources to realize their dreams. Pinball challenged everyone in the crowd "to do something you thought you couldn't do."
The computer donation is part of an ongoing effort by the college to find new homes for the Centre's older computers. As Canada's foremost new media school, the Centre for Creative Communications is constantly renewing the technology used by students in the broadcasting, journalism, publishing and digital animation programs.
Lambton College will hold a celebration on Sept. 26 to recognize Shell Canada Products, in Corunna, for its recent $100,000 donation. A new sign dedicating a technology lab to Shell will be unveiled at 4 p.m. in Room N107.
Earlier this year, Shell announced the donation to Lambton College Targets Excellence in Education Campaign, as its contribution to the college's massive renovation and upgrade project.
Over the past 15 years, Shell has committed more than $250,000 to Lambton College assisting with upgrading facilities, expansions and support of new college programs such as Chemical Production Engineering Technology, Mechanical Technician -- Industrial Maintenance, and Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technology.
