Human Resources Development Minister Jane Stewart, in partnership with the City of Toronto, recently announced the establishment of a one-time-only special agreement under Human Resources Development Canada's (HRDC) Summer Career Placements (SCP) program.
SCP offers wage subsidies to employers to create career-related summer employment opportunities for students from 15 to 30 years of age. Secondary and post-secondary students are hired for a period of six to 16 weeks.
The program aims to provide quality, career-related employment opportunities for students, which provide them with earnings to assist them in pursuing further education.
The agreement, valued at more than $800,000, was launched Monday and will last for nine weeks.
"It is imperative that we support students in the City of Toronto during the economic recovery from the recent SARS crisis that the city has endured," Steward said. "Through this agreement, we are increasing the opportunity for students to build their careers while they are developing the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the future."
"It is important to everyone that youth have jobs in the summer. We are pleased to have Human Resources Development Canada as a partner," said Mayor Mel Lastman. "Every effort to help the city recover from SARS is appreciated."
