"I looked at programs in management faculties at top business schools around the world," says Ranil Herath, director of international business development at Canadian Business College. "I finally decided on the "Essential Leader" series developed by Harvard Business School Publishing since these courses closely matched the needs of our students."
Courses include leadership transitions, negotiating for results, managing direct reports, managing virtual teams, productive business dialogue, managing change and service success: building morale, loyalty and profits.
"As a career college we do ongoing research on the labour market in the Greater Toronto Area and have a good understanding of the demands of employers," Herath says. "We have quite a number of people here who are in career transition and many others looking (to upgrade their skills). The influx of new Canadians is also pushing the demand for career education. We believe that all of these people will benefit from leadership and management training."
Herath points to the What is a Leader? course as an example. Students learn the difference between management and leadership and learn techniques for coping with rapid change. They evaluate their leadership skills by looking at how they allocate their time and analyze their "emotional intelligence" to determine their strengths and weaknesses as a leader.
A leader is not defined by position, Herath explains. "It's someone people will listen to and follow. It doesn't necessarily mean someone with charisma. It's someone others respect and are willing to follow," he says.
"It has a lot to do with having emotional intelligence and knowing how to effect positive change. If you have these skills, you drive that much faster to a leadership position. "
Others may be looking to upgrade skills to keep up with today's changing workforce. Managing Virtual Teams, for example, recognizes that team members often rely on technology to communicate and managing them requires a unique set of skills. Students are introduced to tools for creating a successful virtual team, including great people, effective communication, appropriate technology and a shared vision and process.
Canadian Business College began offering the online courses in November. Students have unlimited 12-month access to complete a course.
"We give our students the option of customizing a Canadian Business College program to incorporate these courses which are developed by Harvard Business School Publishing," Herath says.
Someone taking the Business Accounting Diploma, for example, may also be interested in taking the negotiating skills course. "In addition to receiving their diploma, they will also be awarded a certificate for completing each of these modules," Herath says.
Certificates will be issued by the Canadian Business College and acknowledge the content was provided by Harvard Business School Publishing, a non-profit organization owned by Harvard University.
Canadian Business College was established in 1992 and is registered as a Private Career College with the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. Visit www.cb straining.com to learn more.
