Salas was awarded $5,000 and will travel with Culinary Team Canada to compete in the World Culinary Olympics in Erfurt, Germany, in October 2008.
"The competition was a great learning opportunity. I received great support from my mentor and professor, chef James Bodanis," Salas said. "My studies at Humber, together with the competitions, have prepared me for the workforce so that I can pursue my passion for cooking."
Competitors of the Knorr challenge were required to prepare a three-course menu for eight persons, featuring one appetizer, one entree and one dessert.
Participants were judged on cooking technique and skills; work plan and menu; organizational skills; product utilization; and safety and sanitation.
"It was Melissa's drive and focus that made it possible to achieve this milestone," said Bodanis, CCC and professor, Humber School of Hospitality, Recreation & Tourism.
"At Knorr, we believe in the young chefs of tomorrow," said Tim Belanger, divisional chef, Unilever Foodsolutions and president of The Escoffier Society of Toronto. "Melissa is a great example of the next generation of chefs in Canada."
