When this country's senior managers need to enhance their skill set and maintain a professional edge, they go to Queen's School of Business for open enrolment executive education.

BEST IN CANADA

Recently, the school's executive development programs were ranked the best in Canada and 15th in the world by the prestigious UK-based Financial Times' annual ranking, surpassing such well-known schools as The Wharton School, London Business School and MIT Sloan School of Management.

"The executive education marketplace is fiercely competitive and increasingly global, and we're proud that today's business leaders continue to view Queen's among the world's best," said David Saunders, dean of Queen's School of Business.

Robert Moreau of New Brunswick can personally vouch for the quality of these programs. In April 2006, Moreau, then a chief financial officer for a large manufacturing company, took part in the school's most comprehensive offering, the three-week Queen's Executive program.

"I was at a point in my career where I needed some type of refresher. I wanted to know about current best business practices and strategies, so that I could meet the requirements of change," Moreau says. "I was researching schools, and Queen's had excellent facilitators and I was impressed with what the program covered."

During the three-week program, participants gain new insights into the latest thinking and practice in the areas of strategic planning and implementation, leading change, strategic collaboration, finance, marketing and sales management, information management, leadership, creating a high-performance organization, and negotiation and consensus- building.

"The course material was presented in a way that was accessible regardless of your portfolio. The content was very practical and covered well how to lead change and manage risk through strategic planning," Moreau says. "The content was very well balanced and you walk away with more than enough materials to refer back to in the future."

Moreau had access to a top-notch team of teachers who possessed extensive experience consulting on management thought and practice for leading worldwide corporations.

"They were able to present the material and adapt it in a way that made you feel like they knew your organization. They could connect to the realities of the real world of work, as they were industry experienced and knew what it took to promote change in an organization," he says.

As campus residents, participants in these programs not only enjoy cutting-edge management training, but a wide range of lifestyle activities outside of the classroom, including team sports, museum tours, culinary classes and free accommodation and recreational programming for their families, should they wish to visit on the weekend.

CONFERENCE CENTRE

Participants stay at the Donald Gordon Conference Centre, a dedicated conference facility with comfortable, well-appointed suites, a well-equipped fitness centre, a pub, several lounges and, of course, state-of-the-art conference facilities.

For Moreau, the experience provided him with an expanded professional network and a more comprehensive set of management tools that provided the confidence to take his career to the next level: in January, he was hired as vice-president of finance and information technologies at Assumption Life.

"The tools I learned helped with my transition to my new organization and I continue to bring what I learned to my workplace," Moreau says. "The program solidified an ambition that I had and encouraged me to set sail."
