One perk of working in a large office is the chance to participate in brainstorming sessions, like the ones that RSM Richter’s tax department holds over lunch each Tuesday.

These are shorter, more casual versions of the company’s budget meetings. Topics range from tax issues in the news to specific problems raised by members of the group, such as how international investments, mergers and acquisitions might affect taxation. Binns often participates.

He says that getting informal correction and support from colleagues improves his presentations to clients. He also likes discussing technical details with people he considers to be the best tax minds in the country. “The partners I work with, in my opinion, are top-notch,” he says. “In my eyes, they’re some of the best tax practitioners in the country. Accounting Co-op Programs in Quebec

Cooperative (or “co-op”) learning programs offer academic degrees that combine traditional on-campus study with significant jobsite experience at partner institutions. Co-op students get hired very easily, says André Allaire, Reporting and Consolidation Manager at SNC-Lavalin. Allaire has taken on 25 people from the Université de Sherbrooke’s accounting co-op program in the last two years. Since then, six of them have been hired full-time.

Sherbrooke’s program is a bachelor’s degree in business administration, with six choices of specialization: accounting, finance, human resources, management, marketing, and information and systems management.
