While supervisors rate promotions and cash as the two most valued forms of recognition for administrative professionals, those support staff prefer a simple thank you and having their accomplishments passed on to senior management.
The survey conducted for OfficeTeam and the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) was released in advance of Administrative Professionals Week (APW) April 19-25.
The managers polled believe that administrative professionals working for them would value a promotion as the best reward for a job well done. Those bosses believe cash is the second best form of recognition, followed in order by paid time off; the supervisor telling senior management of the employee's achievement; and an in-person thank you.
The administrative professionals would prefer to be recognized with an in-person thank you or for the boss to tell senior management of their achievement (tied for first); followed by a promotion; membership to a professional association; and registration for a conference or seminar.
The research also revealed how instrumental recognition is in attracting and retaining professionals, even in a soft economy. Two out of three (66%) administrative employees polled said they would likely leave their jobs if they did not feel appreciated by their manager. And 70% of support professionals said the company's recognition program would factor into their decision to accept a job with a potential employer.
