Massey owns Novel Education and Tutoring Inc. (www.neatinc.ca), a private, in-home tutoring company that helps kids in grades one through 12 to succeed in school. His tutors build student skills through homework completion and other skills-building exercises tailored to each client.
"I love both teaching and business, so I decided to combine the two," Massey says. "Unlike a learning centre, we tutor using our students' actual homework assignments so our kids aren't saddled with more work. We build on what they've learned that day in class, in the private comfort of their family home," he says.
In business since September 2004, Massey worked at another job to build his funds to start his venture. "Since I've been self-employed, I wake up each day with a clear sense of purpose and direction. I can't wait for what lies down the road for my new business."
Massey's company is serving a growing market for private student learning services. Called the "Baby Boom Echo" generation, today's baby boomers have the extra cash to help their kids excel in school.
Marketing is important
The most important lesson Massey has learned as a new entrepreneur is to get good at marketing. "Learn as much as you can about marketing, and focus at least 70% of your time on it," he recommends. "You may have a great idea for a business, but people need to hear about it."
Massey has plans to do more of what he loves by offering additional learning opportunities to his pupils.
"We're introducing a life-skills course to help our kids in other areas such as time management," Massey says.
