Susan Morry never stopped believing in her board game, which now sells in stores across Canada.
"I've been called a poster child for determination and tenacity, because I believed so much in my product," entrepreneur Susan Morry says.
Morry is the creator of "If You Had to Choose ...?" a board game where players are asked tough questions about life choices and make bets on how each other will respond. Her company is called Choose Games, Inc. (www.ifyouhadtochoosegame.com).
The fantasy board game presents provocative questions about individual priorities to do with love, money, sexuality, relationships and spirituality. Players predict how others will answer and then attempt to persuade them to change their minds through intense discussion.
For example, the game asks "Would you rather be rich your whole life but never meet your soul mate?" or, "Would you rather be famous but die at age 58 or always be unknown but live to be 102?"
Morry, a high school English teacher, says she used these kinds of questions with her students and their reactions led her to create the game.
"It's a fun game to play because it makes you think about life choices while helping you to get know other people better," she says.
Morry's game is steadily gaining popularity. It's sold in Indigo and Chapters stores across Canada and now in the United States. Her success, however, didn't happen overnight.
"It took me 10 years to raise the money to produce the first batch of games," she recalls. "I approached venture capitalists, angel investors and banks without any luck. About a year ago, I finally secured the funds I needed from a friend who now helps me manage the company."
Morry says a new entrepreneur must never stop believing in his or her idea. "There's nothing more exciting than following through on your ideas and seeing them come to fruition. Just keep going and it will happen."
