Cashing in on the Cuban crazeMany entrepreneurs have launched successful small businesses by bringing a taste of their homeland to Canada. "We discovered a great opportunity here in Toronto because people really love Cuban flair," new entrepreneur Fernando Morales says. ROGER PIERCE |

Fernando Service Group is a special events company specializing in Cuban culture. For either social or corporate events, it provides its clients with Cuban menus, live bands, dancers and cigar rollers. Upon request, the company will also set up an onsite Mojito Bar.
"We cater to everyone who loves Cuban culture," Morales says. "People often fall in love with Cuba during their vacation and they want us to re-create their Caribbean experience here."
Morales uses his considerable expertise in the hospitality industry and his extensive network of Cuban professionals to create truly unforgettable events. "Our clients benefit from our passion for Fiestas and proven ability to entertain."
Morales says his business is unique because it is owned and operated exclusively by Cubans.
While it's not a career choice for everyone, Morales says the best part of being an entrepreneur is the pride he feels from creating his own company. On the flip side, he says the worst part about self-employment is "the long hours, the complete responsibility for everything and the guilt I feel for not starting up sooner."
More than just another business, Fernando Service Group works to enhance awareness of the Cuban culture in the GTA; for example, the company is behind a drive to create The Cuban Art Gallery of Toronto. "We want to become a point of reference for Cubans who make Canada their new home, as well as for Canadians who seek traditional Cuban entertainment," Morales says.
Torontonians are invited to experience everything Cuban at an upcoming social event organized by the company. "Musica on a Summer Evening" will be held on July 29 at the Palais Royale and will feature the very best of Cuban culture including traditional Cuban food, live Cuban music, dancers, cigar rollers and more. Tickets are available by contacting Morales at 416-827-0071 or by e-mailing fernandomt@aol.com.
