Union says 174 workers at Sklar Furniture workers to lose jobs despite concessions

AJAX, Ont. - The United Steelworkers' union says it has been advised that Sklar Furniture in Ajax, Ont., has declared bankruptcy and 174 workers there will lose their jobs.

The Steelworkers say union members at the factory, part of the U.S.-based Sklar Peppler Furniture business, have agreed to concessions since the Canadian subsidiary sought creditor protection two years ago.

However, the union said it was informed late Thursday by Sklar Furniture that it has now been declared bankrupt.

Wayne Fraser, the union's director for the Ontario-Atlantic region, said the USW will seek to get money owed to its members under recent amendments to the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act that protects employees wages and vacation pay.
