Truck driver who hit bus full of Alta oil workers says there were no lights on

EDMONTON - A truck driver who slammed into a bus full of Alberta oilpatch workers says he couldn't see the coach straddling the highway because there weren't any lights on.

Inderjit Singh Virk of Brampton, Ont., is testifying in his own defence at his dangerous driving trial. He told the judge hearing the case that there wasn't anything he could do to avoid the bus by the time he saw it on the dark road.

Six people were killed and several others were seriously hurt when Virk's truck carrying peat moss broadsided the bus around 1 a.m. on May 20, 2005, near Gibbons, Alta.

Virk has pleaded not guilty to six counts of dangerous driving causing death and 19 charges of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

His testimony conflicts with accounts from other witnesses, who told court the bus had all its interior lights on, as well as its headlights and hazard lights.
