DATE SENT
- It's important to include the date so that employers can keep track of when you applied.
- Helpful hint: Create a chart to keep track of your applications. Write down the name of the company, the day you sent your resumé, the name of the contact person and the date you plan to follow up with a telephone call.

RECIPIENT
- If possible, try not to begin with "To Whom It May Concern" or "Attention: Human Resources Manager".
- Employers notice when letters are addressed to the right person.
- To find out the name of the recruiter, you can always call the company and ask the receptionist. This shows that you are determined and resourceful.

APPLICATION
- The first thing you should do is let them know why you are writing and express interest in their company or organization.
- Taken extended sick leave? You don't have to mention it in the letter - it's personal information.
- Instead, you can bring up the subject of your leave during the interview. Face to face, it'll be easier to prove that your illness has not affected your abilities.

SALES PITCH
- This is where you should sell yourself to the employer! Emphasize your skills, education and expertise.
- Show that you have the qualities the company is looking for. In our example, the company specializes in landscaping rocky and rugged terrains. Julie makes it clear that she has worked on different types of terrain.
- If you've been off work for a while, focus on your past accomplishments.

CONCLUSION
- Repeat your interest in working for the company.
- Don't forget to mention that you'd like to meet the employer for an interview.
- Let them know that you are motivated by saying that you'll contact them soon. It's a sign of respect (I'm letting you know in advance) and determination (I'm not just going to sit back and see what happens).
