Campus blog gives U of T students 24/7 access to clubs, events

It all started with an idea. A young engineering student wanted to create a medium that would bring the entire campus community together.

SUN MEDIA

The result was blogut.ca, a blog about the University of Toronto written by U of T students. The site, launched a year ago, is dedicated to news, events, stories and information that may be of interest to the school's student body.

"It allows for immediate access to students 24 hours a day," explains co-editor Ana Lopez, a fourth-year English and Film student.

Lopez says the site's main goal is to promote events created by students to the rest of the U of T community, giving students the opportunity to get more involved in the multitude of things that take place on campus.

500 VISITORS A DAY

So far, Lopez says the site has

received a great response from the student body, averaging up to 500 visitors per day. "It's a great way for students to find out about things they might not otherwise hear about."

Supported by the university's student union, the site works with other campus clubs and organizations for cross promotion.

The team also attends the university's annual club showcase to let clubs know how they can promote their own events and information through the website.

In an effort to let students know what's available on campus, Lopez says they try to cover as many groups and events as they can, providing as much information as possible.

The truth is, Lopez says, it can be scary for new students who are thinking of joining a club or organization. "Through a computer screen, it's easier to find out," she explains.
