Hamilton is in the sex business and business is booming. The 46-year-old launched Bonnie's Bedroom in Burlington 21/2 years ago and offers lingerie and adult toys via home parties and online sales. She's a superstar at sales.
"The majority of women are curious but too embarrassed to go into a sex store -- so we bring the products to them. It's really a fun time," says Hamilton, a gregarious go-getter who admits her racy business doesn't extend into her own bedroom. "People think because I sell this stuff, I'm into kink but we're just regular people, probably more boring than most."
Hamilton not only handles the books and the ordering, she also continues to do home shows herself and has travelled as far as Windsor, Gravenhurst and Bobcaygen to showcase her products; she's also flown to places like Quebec and B.C., and also attends the premier sex and lifestyle shows for the exposure. She hopes to expand across Canada in the next few years.
"My sons are totally disgusted, but my daughter is so proud," laughs Hamilton, who admits she didn't have a business plan when she started out, but because she worked for a major competitor for 15 years prior, she was brimming with the experience and contacts.
Long hours
Crawford figured she could do it better and bigger -- her sizes go up to 5x -- as well as offer products cheaper and quicker. She delivers within 48 hours and all orders arrive in discreet packages.
Toughest thing: "The long hours but remember you'll work harder for yourself than anyone else," says Hamilton, who puts every dime back into building the business.
She started out in the in-home party industry years ago because "it's fun, easy money and I could raise my own family."
Now as president, she loves calling the shots and all the interesting people she meets. "I get teased a lot but I really enjoy my job. Once at a sex show, I was beside a flogging booth -- that was fun!"
It's essential to add some spice to your sex life, adds Hamilton: "It takes work, and few are putting any effort in. Remember if you don't wear the sexy lingerie, his mistress will!"
