Tamara Welbourn has gone from one interior to another, so to speak. She now fixes up homes instead of fixing up people.

Tamara Welbourn First Impression Staging and Redesign

The former operating room nurse of 22 years, who dealt with everything from trauma to liver transplants, recently opened up First Impression Staging and Redesign in Burlington.

"Decorating has always been a passion for me -- I'd do my own home and those of family and friends," says Welbourn, 47. "One day I woke up and decided to try my own business. I needed to have a creative outlet."

Welbourn quickly acquired her redesign certification and is now attending an interior decorating course while running a full-time business that fixes design dilemmas.

She makes a great first impression and wants others to do the same when it comes to their home. Welbourn specializes in transforming tired rooms with dramatic make-overs using existing furnishings and accessories.

And home staging -- esthetically readying homes to sell -- is a booming branch of the business.

"I help people get a room balanced as well as get organized. Families are so busy today and have issues with clutter. Other clients are retired and downsizing," says Welbourn.

And Welbourn adores her redesigned life: "I'm not there yet but I just love it -- and my clients love the results and refer me. That's all so rewarding."

She advises women to get adequate business background and "network with similar-minded people who want to help you succeed."
